We understand that severe dental pain can be debilitating and may prevent you from taking part in routine daily activities. This pain leads some to attempt at treating their toothache or dental emergency at home with remedies ranging from topical analgesic creams, like Orajel® or aspirin.
There are many causes of tooth pain including trauma, decay, and infection. Left untreated by a dental professional, a simple toothache can lead to more serious complications. This can have permanent consequences that will end up costing you more in the long run.
If you have a dental emergency in Grand Rapids, call Dr. Boone right away at (616) 361-6161.
Causes of Tooth Pain
Pulpitis is the inflammation of a tooth’s inner core or pulp and is often caused by an infection due to decay that has spread to the nerves in this area. Symptoms can include sensitivity to hot or cold, and pain in the mouth, face, or jaw. This condition can also sometimes result from trauma or gum disease. In most cases of pulpitis, root canal therapy or extraction is necessary.
An abscess is an infection at the root of a tooth and, like pulpitis, is usually caused by extensive tooth decay. Fever, pain, redness, swelling, and a bitter taste in the mouth are signs of an abscess.
A broken or dislodged tooth is always a dental emergency, whether it’s cracked or has been completely avulsed. Always attempt to locate broken pieces or the missing tooth. Rinse your mouth and the tooth with warm water, but do not remove the natural fragments attached to the tooth. Reinsert the tooth, making sure to position it correctly. If this isn’t possible, store the tooth or pieces in milk or lightly salted water and call our office immediately.
